Dr. Richard Sawatzky holds a Canada Research Chair in Patient-Reported Outcomes at Trinity Western University, is research scientist with the University of British Columbia Centre for Health Evaluation and Outcome Sciences, and is member of the board of directors of the International Society for Quality of Life Research. His clinical background is in palliative care nursing. He leads a program of research that focuses on the validation and utilization of patient-reported outcome PRO instruments and quality of life (QOL) assessments in various health care contexts, including those for people with chronic life-limiting illnesses. Current research activities include the development and evaluation of statistical methods for PRO measures; the use of tablet devices for quality of life assessments; the selection and utilization of PRO and QOL measures in clinical practice and healthcare decision making; the integration of a palliative approach; educational approaches for patients with colorectal cancer; and patient-reported experiences with knee surgery.
