Director, Surveillance and Assessment Branch
Larry Svenson has over 20 years of experience working in public health. Larry also holds Adjunct Associate Professor appointments with the School of Public Health at the University of Alberta and the Department of Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary.
He is responsible for the development and maintenance of public health surveillance systems and the provision of evidence to inform and evaluate public decisions. He is a strong advocate for evidence-based decision-making and open data initiatives. As part of his role, he also maintains an active applied research agenda having published over 145 peer reviewed articles spanning the health sciences, social sciences, geography, and education disciplines.
Larry is a member of numerous Public Health Agency of Canada expert surveillance advisory committees. He was also one of four professionals selected to represent Canada on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) Commission for Environmental Cooperation’s expert group on asthma surveillance.
Larry is the current chair of the National Surveillance Infrastructure Task Group to the Public Health Network Council of Canada. The Task Group is leading the development of blueprint to strengthen public health surveillance in Canada.
